Chapter 5: Time Off Management > What Is the Time Off Management Process?

WHAT IS THE TIME OFF MANAGEMENT PROCESS?

Everyone needs to take some time off. In small organizations, it’s easy to keep track of who is doing what, and there’s not a real need for an automated solution. Large organizations use dedicated HR platforms such as those provided by PeopleSoft or SAP’s HR module. Somewhere in between the small and the large are many organizations that could use a SharePoint-based solution that helps the human resources department track when employees take vacations and provides an automated approval process.

At the core of the time off management system lays the time bank. A time bank is much like a bank account; the company deposits time into the bank as you work over the course of a year, and then you can withdraw that time. The banking analogy breaks down because a number of rules constrain how you withdraw time from the bank. For instance, you have a certain number of days that you can use more or less any time — your regular vacation days. On the other hand, you have days such as sick days where you can take that time only when you’re sick. This time typically expires, so that if you have five sick days in a year and never use them, they don’t carry them forward to the next year.
