NATIONAL AND STATE HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVES

In 2001 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released Crossing the Quality Chasm, a momentous report detailing an agenda for redesigning the twenty-first century health care system. The proposal urged all health care constituencies including policymakers, purchasers, regulators, health professionals, health care trustees, management, and consumers “to commit to a national statement of purpose for the health care system as a whole and to a shared agenda” to raise the quality of care (2001). Serving as a lynchpin, this report stimulated federal and state initiatives to redefine health care and support new models of care as priorities of health reform. This report also stimulated initiatives to implement foundational health care information technology.
