Process scope and strategy fit for purpose?
The first ‘fit for purpose’ test addresses ‘process scope’ and the underlying process strategy. It provides a convenient place to pause and consider project uncertainty as it is perceived at this point in the PUMP.
Stopping the project may be a possibility needing consideration if the previous steps raise serious questions about the project’s viability. However, answering such questions usually becomes central to the objectives of the PUMP, requiring further development of the PUMP strategy and operational plans. At its simplest, the top-down appreciation of uncertainty may identify a single potential ‘show-stopper’, and the scope and plan the process tasks may then address how best to assess the extent to which this show-stopper can be revised, removed, resolved or dissolved. Deciding whether it is worth undertaking a PUMP to resolve a show-stopper or whether it is better to bring the whole project to a stop without further work can be the key issue.
