Configuring Protection of Hyper-V Hosts
The DPM server is installed, agents are deployed, storage is assigned—now you need to protect your virtual machines! DPM was designed to allow you to gather similar resources requiring protection into groups. A protection group is a policy defining what you want to protect and how you want to protect it. This section focuses on protecting VMs. Virtual machine protection groups should be created to collect and protect VMs that have similar retention and recovery requirements.
You can define a protection group by selecting Protection from the Ribbon and clicking Create Protection Group in the Actions pane. Like other tasks within DPM, the process is wizard-driven.
What Do You Want to Protect?
On the first page of the Create New Protection Group Wizard, the left pane lists the production servers that are currently running the DPM agent. By expanding any server, you see common data object types and data sources that are specific to the workloads running on that machine. On all production servers protected by DPM, you can select the following elements:
