Watch the Film: The King's Speech
In this film, the Duke of York, second son of the King of England, has a serious problem: he stutters. This may sound like a personal matter, but it is not. It is a problem for the Empire. Like anyone with a visible position in a large organization, he must represent his organization by speaking in public. The prince was not born with a stutter. It was a learned characteristic that had become part of his identity. To solve the problem, the prince has to change the assumptions he has made about himself. He has to change his identity. After many others try unsuccessfully to help the prince, a speech therapist named Lionel Logue leads him through the deep change process. We might do well to study what this man did.
