Chapter 4: Modeling II > Using Curves

Using Curves

Maya 2012 introduces numerous enhancements to polygon extruding. In addition to the virtual sliders discussed in Chapter 3, the Extrude tool now allows you to extrude a surface along a generated or predefned curve. Once created, the shape can be further manipulated by tapering the geometry along the curve. In this section we'll use the Extrude tool to create pipes and hoses.

Create an Extrusion Curve

images Many objects in the world can be classified as a pipe or a hose when it comes to modeling. Hard surface objects like railings, ducts, and poles are obvious, but organic objects like an intestine, tree limbs, or creature tentacles might not be so obvious. Maya has many different ways to quickly generate these types of surfaces, but here you'll learn how the Extrude tool can create curves for your fgure's torso, helmet, and armor.
