Who else is in the FX 300?
Some of the traditional lines of distinction between the three broad groups outlined above are becoming blurred as online margin FX providers begin to act as price makers to their clients. These clients are often retail, but some of the larger online platforms also cater to large corporations and even to some of the smaller banks. These online margin FX companies frequently turn over as much volume as many of the banks, and are significant players in the global foreign exchange market as they seek to offset the positions created by the activities of their clients.
The foreign exchange market is dominated by the global inter-bank (wholesale) sector, which is where the majority of money is exchanged and is the source of the general price levels that all other participants in the market trade on. These other participants make up the second group we looked at, the clients of the wholesale sector. In this group we include corporations, fund managers, investors, even governments and sovereign wealth funds. It is also the group to which retail traders belong. Bringing all of these parties together are the members of the third group, the brokers and facilitators.
