11. Configuring Windows Firewall and IPsec

Chapter 11. Configuring Windows Firewall and IPsec

Protecting an organization’s computers is a key job role of every IT administrator. Two essential technologies that can help ensure your computers are secure are firewalls and Internet Protocol Security (IPsec). Microsoft Windows Server 2012 includes a host-based firewall called Windows Firewall with Advanced Security that helps you protect the servers on your network. Windows Firewall with Advanced Security is also included in the Windows 8 client operating system.

But protecting individual computers on your network is not enough. You must also be able to protect the network traffic that flows between your computers, and between your computers and other computers outside the corporate network. This can be accomplished by configuring IPsec on the computers that need to communicate with one another. Windows Firewall with Advanced Security also includes built-in functionality for configuring IPsec on the computer.
