[ Is collaborative behavior measured and encouraged by re- ward and recognition systems? A lack of intragroup collaboration and cooperation is often the result of a lack of role clarity and accountability. If em- ployees are confused about their individual roles or account- abilities, they will not know on whom they are to depend for help in performing their jobs, nor in what ways others are de- pendent on them. It is also critical that managers establish, and make clear to employees, the goals of the group that are shared by all group members. Managers must be sure to identify where individual goals may be competing with shared group goals and work to eliminate, or at least minimize, these obstacles. Further, wher- ever possible, performance management systems should for- mally recognize and reward the collaborative behaviors of both individuals and the group as a whole.
