LEADING THE ORGANISATION > CHAPTER 37 RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

CHAPTER 37

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

c37uf001

What would you do with a scrap of cardboard and some old bottle tops? The kids in the village knew the answer: they made themselves a chequers board. Lack of resources never stopped a successful start up; lack of imagination kills even the greatest firm. Resource constraints exist, but mainly in our heads.

Budget management is one of those basic disciplines all managers learn early in their careers. In larger organisations, the budgets omit the last three zeros: anything less than $1000 or £1000 is simply a rounding error. In the largest organisations, such as government, they omit the last six zeroes. Anything less than a million dollars is a rounding error.

Many tribal families live on less than a thousand dollars a year: they are a rounding error on your firm’s HR or IT budget. They learn to make the most of anything and everything. Nothing is left to waste, because they cannot afford waste. Recycling is not a statement of your green credentials: it is a way of life to survive.
