OVERCOMING RESISTANCE

Not everybody is receptive to trying out ideas such as these. Some people feel too self-conscious, or they are sceptical or stubborn. They like to do it their own way.

I’ve been like that in the past. Some of these and other techniques do sound a little strange but, if you want to get an edge – to get that little extra – you need to try both the orthodox and the unorthodox. You have to be open to new ideas, especially when the people who are using them are so successful.

In the mid 1960s, people made fun of Dick Fosbury’s then unorthodox high jump technique. It was even nicknamed the Fosbury Flop as it was said to resemble a fish flopping about. Fosbury had the last laugh though – he won Olympic gold in 1968 and set a new Olympic record in doing so.
