The subject of leadership deserves a book all of its own; indeed, there are many tens of thousands of books on the subject. It is worth mentioning in passing, because even if you are someone who does not perceive yourself as a leader, you may find yourself in leadership situations from time to time.
When it comes to leadership, here is what the leadership theorists (the people who study leadership for a living) think about leadership, and what I think (a person who has had to take a leadership role in a number of different situations).
A Quick History of Leadership Theory
The Great Man theory (Great Women were generally disregarded at the time). Leaders are born with innate talents that cannot be taught.
The trait theory. Effective leaders have certain traits that can be learnt if we can identify what those traits are.
