WHEN THINGS GO BADLY

Two days before I was due to fly to Sydney for the 2000 Paralympic Games, my father unexpectedly died of a massive stroke. The following day, I had to contact the British Paralympic Association and tell them that I wouldn’t be able to make my flight out of the UK.

Suddenly, despite the years of preparation, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go to Sydney at all. I wanted to spend time with my brother, Ian, and Mum. But as we waited for the day of the funeral, I gradually realized that cancelling my plans would have been the last thing that Dad would have wanted. In fact, he would have been furious with himself if he had become the reason for me missing out on the Paralympics. Even in his death I didn’t want to upset Dad, so I contacted the British Paralympic Association again and they booked me on a late flight to Sydney, the day after his funeral.
