Appendix E Eclipse IBM launched Eclipse in 2001 after buying Object Technology International, a Canadian company. Including the purchase, IBM spent $40 million on the code that it finally released as an open source project. Written in Java, Eclipse ships with its own compiler, so it does not rely on Oracle's Java compiler. As a result, you don't need a JDK to run Eclipse, just a JRE.
