Chapter 10: Modeling Architectural Exteriors > Adding Secondary Structures

Adding Secondary Structures

After completing the main bulk of the model, you can turn your attention to the smaller details in the scene such as pillars, chimneys, deck, exterior stairs, driveway, and the building lot itself. Some of these items, such as the pillars, can be created with very simple geometry, while other parts are essentially groups of primitive objects. It is important to break down the objects and categorize them so that they can be created quickly and efficiently. There is no use wasting time building objects that can be created with simple models with creative materials or modeling objects that exist as preset meshes (or can be derived from presets).

Creating the Pillars and Deck

Scaling of a preset in the modo content library can create the pillars. If you are working on a project that has different needs (windows or doors), check the shared content at the Luxology website, because all of the assets there can be used for both personal and professional projects. In this case, the Column 03 preset (Meshes image Exterior image Columns image Column 03) will work perfectly for the pillars. Add the mesh to the scene, and then move, scale, and duplicate it to create the four pillars in the front of the house.
