Exploring the NWD File

As mentioned in earlier chapters, the NWD file is a snapshot of the model that can be packaged and forwarded to users without the need for the original source files to display properly. The benefit of this format extends beyond the core Navisworks application, because this file can also be viewed in several free viewers. That way, users can interact with the model and reference additional information such as comments, object properties, or even saved viewpoints and animations.

Using Navisworks Freedom

Navisworks Freedom is a free viewer that allows you to view NWD and DWF/DWFx/W2D files. While this application is strictly a read-only viewer, there are plenty of useful tools besides general navigation that make this an important part of the BIM workflow. Users can download Freedom at no charge from www.autodesk.com/navisworksfreedom. Follow the onscreen instruction to access and install the viewer.
