TEN: Revising What You Know > Step 1: Revisit Past Events

Step 1: Revisit Past Events

Dan and Stu have already traveled a long distance. By the time they reach this last stage of change, they've not only succeeded in disrupting a highly entrenched pattern, they've set a more flexible one in motion. Still, when pressure mounts and time dwindles, they continue to get caught in the old pattern, and they will continue to do so until the newer, more flexible pattern takes hold—that is, when it becomes a more enduring structure. To convert an unstable pattern into a more stable structure, we first explore the events2 and capture the knowledge that prevent new patterns from taking hold.3 For continuity's sake, I start with Stu, then turn to Dan.
