Key Terms

As with any subject, it’s a good idea to have a handle on the terms and definitions that surround it. Learning these will help you take part in any discussions you may encounter about flash photography. It will also help you better understand any tutorials on the subject, as well as this book. Some useful terms you should know include the following:

Key light. Also known as the main light, this provides most of the illumination for your subject. Placement of the key light determines the lighting pattern for the subject.

Fill light. This is the secondary light that fills in the shadows. Fill light is not to be confused with fill flash, although the same principles are at work.

Accent lights. These aren’t necessary for the basic exposure, but they can add depth and separate the subject from the background. Some common accent lights include the following:
