Chapter 4: Do Your Homework > Practice or Perish!

Practice or Perish!

This chapter has offered up several ways to help you get ready for a negotiation. Yet one tried-and-true piece of advice still applies: practice makes perfect. At a time when so much data are available to us, we should never ever go into a negotiating situation blindly winging it. April Carty-Sipp implores, “Practice and rehearse often! The more you do that, the more likely the outcome will be in your favor. If you don't take the time to rehearse or prepare, you have to ask yourself how much you really care about whatever it is you're negotiating for.”

April's point completely resonates. If you won't prepare, are you really that deeply interested and invested in the outcome? Practice can occur in your car on the way to work speaking aloud to yourself, by jotting down a script of key points on paper, and certainly by hashing out the conversation with someone you trust. If you want to pinpoint exactly where you shine and need help, you can even record yourself rehearsing on a video camera or in front of a mirror. The important piece isn't how you do it, it's that you take the time to stack the deck in your favor by reviewing and repeating your arguments.
