Allocate Resources to Virtual Machines
Efficiently allocating resources to virtual machines is a key skill that every VMware vSphere administrator needs to master. If you allocate too many or too few resources, performance is negatively impacted. VMware vSphere provides a number of ways to help you make sure that resources are allocated and used efficiently, as you’ll see in this section.
Allocate Resources in the VM Configuration
The first way in which you control resource allocation is by assigning resources in the configuration of the virtual machine. When you create a virtual machine, you assign certain levels of resources to that virtual machine. For example, Figure 12.1 shows the memory configuration for a virtual machine.
Figure 12.1: This virtual machine is configured with 4 GB of RAM, so any guest operating system installed here will never see or use more than 4 GB of RAM.
