peer-to-peer networks do not use dedicated network servers for authenticating users and providing secure access to network resources. In this model, clients share resources, and other clients have access to whatever has been shared.
The role of the domain controller, or DC, is to store the directory services database, which contains all of the objects in the domain environment. The DC also sends updates of the database to all other DCs within the domain.
DCs process logon authentication. They also provide fault tolerance if another DC were to go offline.
