Chapter 4: Business Case Theme > Business Case Responsibilities

Business Case Responsibilities

PRINCE2 assigns a number of responsibilities to the various roles within the project management structure to ensure that the viability of the project is reviewed throughout the project.

Corporate and Programme Management

Using the Project Mandate, corporate or programme management must instigate a project that has a viable Business Case. They must also appoint an Executive who will be responsible for the project’s Business Case throughout the life of the project.

After the project, corporate or programme management takes responsibility for the Benefits Review Plan and must ensure that the project’s benefits (or lack of them) are reviewed.

Executive

Throughout the life of the project, the Executive is responsible for the Business Case. This includes checking that a Business Case is created during the Starting Up a Project process, refined during the Initiating a Project process, and updated during the Managing a Stage Boundary process. In all the decisions that the Executive makes during the project, he will ensure that the latest Business Case still justifies the continuation of the project.
