Feeding Time

The iBeer fiasco is just the tip of the iceberg for corporate interest in the app scene. The traditional software publishers are currently engaged in a land grab across the app development scene — a land grab that does little to dispel the mythology surrounding the Appillionaires. If you thought the Appillionaires were making a lot of money on the App Store, consider what they can make by selling out. Barely a week goes by without a giant media conglomerate reaching out a slimy proboscis and suckering up another independent app developer. The sums of money involved get more and more spectacular with every twist and turn of the app story. Whether it’s Electronic Arts snapping up Angry Birds’ creator Chillingo ($20 million in cash — although the deal excluded EA from any cut for Angry Birds and Cut the Rope) and Flight Control developers’ Firemint ($20-40 million), or social games goliath Zynga buying Wonderland Software, it looks increasingly difficult for an app developer to operate successfully and still resist the incredible sums available if they sell.
