CHAPTER 2 - MANAGING YOURSELF AND LEADING OTHERS > Work – but not as we know it

Work – but not as we know it

The way work is organised has changed fundamentally in recent years: markets have become more sophisticated and truly multinational; technology has speeded up the design and production of goods and services; and the Internet has revolutionised the way we communicate with customers and organise day-to-day business transactions.
The gap between large and small businesses has also narrowed considerably. Although some markets are still dominated by large players who rely on economies of scale, many others have been thrown wide open. Small businesses can now trade all over the world using the Internet to gain market knowledge and reach out to consumers.
This had led to dramatic changes in the way we approach and organise work itself. Organisational hierarchies have become flatter, with more emphasis on smaller, specialised units populated by highly valued ‘knowledge’ workers. Talent is at a premium – even in times of economic difficulty – with job mobility on the increase and organisations having to work ever harder to retain high-performing and high-potential employees.
