Risk in reality

Another CMI report, Disruption and Resilience: The 2010 Business Continuity Management Survey, paints an interesting picture of what managers perceive as the biggest business risks compared to what caused the most disruption over the past 12 months in reality.
For the first time extreme weather was the most commonly experienced disruption, surpassing disruption caused by the loss of IT, which had topped the table in previous years.
Loss of people remains the third most widely experienced disruption (28%), emphasising the need to take people issues into account when assessing risk and to avoid a purely technological approach. Another notable area of growth is experiencing damage to corporate brand, which doubled from 11 to 22%. This highlights the fact that organisations need to pay attention to reputation and brand risk as well as operational risk. (We talk more about managing reputation in Chapter 8.)
