Lesson 12 Avid FX: Titles and 3D > Working in 3D Space - Pg. E-192

E-192 Media Composer 6: Professional Effects and Compositing A cylinder can also have multiple faces: an inside and an outside. You can use the usual Position controls to tumble and spin the cylinder. Additionally, the Cylinder tab has controls for unwrapping the cylinder, as shown in Figure 12.68. Figure 12.68 Partially unwrapped cylinder. Working in 3D Space So far, you've learned how to create various types of 3D objects: text, shapes, and imported graphics. You have seen how you can light these objects, and also how you can get shadows to cast on different letters, for example. In this section, you are going to look at how objects can be made to interact with each other in 3D space. Let's begin by creating a basic 3D shape: an arrow. To create an arrow: 1. Create a new composition to start afresh. To do so, press C OMMAND +O PTION +N (Mac) or C TRL +A LT +N (Windows). 2. Click the A DD E XTRUDED S HAPE button (refer to Figure 12.59). 3. Expand the R ECTANGLE track and select the S ILHOUETTE track inside. 4. In the Shape controls (refer to Figure 12.60), select the A RROW type and choose R IGHT from the A RROW T YPE menu. 5. Now select the top Arrow track rather than the Silhouette track and click the M ATERIALS tab. Choose a material type and color for the front surface of the arrow. 6. Click the P OSITION tab and adjust the S CALE Y setting to make the arrow slightly thinner, as shown in Figure 12.69. (You'll need to unlock the link between the Scale X, Y, and Z controls.)
