Chapter 2 Nikon V1 Quick Start > All Those Modes!

All Those Modes!

Your Nikon V1 has four distinctly different shooting modes: Motion Snapshot, Smart Photo Selector, Still Image mode, and Movie mode. Of course, as we move along, you’ll discover that other settings are also described as modes, such as exposure modes, focus modes, and the like. But I intend to keep this Quick Start as simple as possible, so I’ll have you use Still Image mode and Movie mode in this chapter, and save full descriptions of the other shooting modes for Chapter 4. For the incurably curious, I’ll do nothing more than provide a quick description of each of these shooting modes, each of which can be selected by rotating the mode dial, shown in Figure 2.1:

image Motion Snapshot. This mode lets you record movie clippettes of about a second in length, played back in slow motion over about 2.5 seconds, along with a still photograph. This is a great feature for grabbing special moments. You can choose a background music “theme” from Beauty, Waves, Relaxation, and Tenderness motifs.
