Nikon J1: Troubleshooting and Prevention

One of the nice things about modern electronic cameras like the Nikon J1 is that they have fewer mechanical moving parts to fail, so they are less likely to “wear out.” No film transport mechanism, no wind lever or motor drive, no complicated mechanical linkages from camera to lens to physically stop down the lens aperture. Instead, tiny, reliable motors are built into each lens (and you lose the use of only that lens should something fail), and the Nikon 1 series lacks one of the few major moving parts in its dSLR counterparts—the moving mirror. Even the shutter of this camera functions without moving, because it’s electronic.

You don’t need to worry about sensor cleaning—the J1 has a glass filter located well in front of the sensor (unlike it’s cousin, the Nikon V1, which has no such protection and must use both a sensor cleaning mechanism and human cleaning instead). With the J1, any dust that settles on the filter is always out of focus, and it can be easily brushed off without worrying about damaging a filter secured directly to the sensor itself.
