Some Nuts and Bolts

In creating the entry-level Nikon J1 version of its new line of Nikon 1 cameras, the company created a very special niche for potential buyers of their mirrorless ILC (interchangeable lens camera) models. On the one hand, the J1 is a step up from the point-and-shoot cameras that many avid—but non-hobbyist—photographers have enthusiastically embraced. But on the other hand, the J1 also appeals to those who are more serious about photography—whether they intended to become photo buffs or not.

In order to meet the needs of both audiences, I’ve extracted some of the more techie discussions that would ordinarily go in the mainstream text and lodged them here. Much of the information in this appendix is good to know, but not absolutely essential when you’re starting out using the Nikon J1 camera. So, you can absorb the must-know information presented in the 13 chapters of this book, and, after you’ve mastered the requisites, you can come here to learn more. The nuts and bolts presented here will help you master all the richer capabilities and techniques possible with your Nikon 1 camera, which is, despite its simplicity, a very sophisticated piece of machinery.
