Chapter 5 Outdoor Flash Photography > Outdoor Off-Camera Flash Techniques

Outdoor Off-Camera Flash Techniques

Using your flash unit off-camera is always a nice alternative to on-camera flash. Classic portrait lighting patterns as described in Chapter 4, might not be as easy to control in brighter outdoor conditions, but many of the same principles still apply. The environment can provide you with different light sources other than flash to accomplish many of the same things. For example, with a single flash setup, the ambient lighting can provide the main light, while sunlight coming in from slightly behind the subject or through the trees can provide a nice hair light, while your flash takes on the role of fill light. There are actually several ways to use off-camera flash successfully outdoors.
