Lesson 11 Real-Time AudioSuite (RTAS) > Understanding RTAS Mixdown Workflows

Understanding RTAS Mixdown Workflows

Media Composer is limited to 16 voices, but it features 24 tracks of audio. If each of those 24 tracks of audio was a 7.1 surround track, then 216 voices could be represented (24 tracks * 8 voices) but you couldn’t hear them all. How do you make use of all these tracks? Why are they there?

The secret is to use audio mixdowns.

An audio mixdown renders the sound from selected tracks into a new clip, which it then places onto another track. The new clip contains the summation of all the sounds from the selected tracks, but now they are pre-processed into a single track. To your ears, there should be no difference in sound between the mixed-down clip and the original tracks, but to Media Composer there is a big difference: Fewer resources are used during playback.
