This system works fairly well, but it’s not exactly realistic. The value of “close” is an absolute value, and humans don’t think in absolutes like that. For example, let’s say I see Mike on the GDC showroom floor and want to say hello. If I say hello from too far away, he won’t hear me through the hustle and bustle of the conference, so I need to walk up to him until I am reasonably “close” before saying anything. What is “close”? In this case, let’s say it’s about 30 feet. In the system above, I would walk up to exactly 30 feet away and say hello. If multiple people were all trying to say hello to Mike, we would all form a perfect 30-foot radius circle around him, which would look a bit creepy.
