The Inability of Many Organizations to Recognize the Need for Process

First, many if not most organizations fail to recognize that process is now necessary because they have grown beyond the capability of their existing structure and patterns. Most enterprises begin with a small number of people working closely together to do whatever is necessary to succeed. They frequently work in an ad hoc work environment where everyone makes it up as they go along. They flourish through their sheer will and ingenuity and seldom imagine the day when formal process will be necessary for them to continue to prosper. That day is generally a rude awakening that is met with great chagrin and resistance.
