Chapter 15: Process Management > Process Monitoring

Process Monitoring

Most people I encounter think of process monitoring as the oversight and measurement of the metrics required to determine if the process is performing as expected. This is indeed a primary element of process monitoring but it is only one dimension. Process monitoring also includes monitoring the customer and monitoring best practices. Let's look at each.

Measure Process Performance

Successful process performance monitoring requires expertise in metrics management. This expertise is first required in the process design stage when high-level metrics for the process are first identified. Metrics expertise is next required during the process implementation stage when the project team establishes a systematic approach to monitoring and measuring the process. Once a process is implemented, the process owner must be a master of metrics management to ensure the process is successful in meeting enterprise objectives. The need for all of this metrics-related work is seldom viewed as a challenge given the pervasive nature of metrics in enterprises today.
