CHAPTER 15: Where to Go Next… > Operating System Performance

Operating System Performance

We have focused on a significant amount of performance improvements and optimizations for applications and examined methods for offloading processing to other servers and hardware. We have not examined one key piece of any server system: the operating system. It is not hard to derive further performance from operating systems and there are many tweaks and changes you can make to get more.

The problem is that these tweaks can have flow-on effects and can cause problems for certain applications. More to the point, however, many of the specific performance increases for one OS may not work on another and can even have negative impacts. This can also affect performance between two identical servers that have the same operating system yet have different purposes. No small amount of advice from us would replace good research into the specific needs of your system, its operating system, and its function. However, with this all in mind we can provide some general advice.
