Chapter 10: IT and Business Processes > The Reengineering Process

The Reengineering Process

Identifying the business processes for a reengineering project is obviously a strategic decision. If you ever find yourself part of a BPR project, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. Instead of trying to change several processes at a time, for example, it might be advisable to first take up a few high-impact processes that will result in a quick turnaround. Quick results will be in the favor of the BPR project and act as a showcase for the other processes in the project.

The processes taken up for the BPR project should be divided into phases, with the total project duration not exceeding 12 months. Change management efforts should follow each phase. Project structure might involve a BPR leader at the organization level, process leaders, process reengineering teams, and the employees involved in or affected by the reengineering project. Getting employee input is critical because they, more than anyone, understand the original process.
