CHAPTER 5: Keys and Indexing

C H A P T E R  5

Keys and Indexing

This chapter discusses the use of keys and indexes in PeopleSoft, and how they translate into indexes and implicit constraints in Oracle (there is an almost total absence of explicit constraints in a PeopleSoft database). The previous chapter looked at how the two data dictionaries are related. Here, we look at how PeopleSoft uses the “keys”1 defined in its data dictionary to generate SQL in the application and to create the indexes in the database to support that SQL.

We also examine the role of Application Designer in more detail. This Windows client program is a complete development environment for PeopleSoft online applications. In addition, it is used to specify Application Engine batch programs, to migrate functionality between PeopleSoft environments, and to apply PeopleSoft patches.
