CHAPTER 9: Performance Metrics

C H A P T E R  9

Performance Metrics

Performance tuning is a search for lost time.

Performance improvements are achieved by reducing response time.1 Therefore, I am always looking for the processes or parts of processes that take the most time. These places are where it is most efficient to direct the tuning effort, and where the minimum amount of tuning effort can have the maximum amount of performance effect. This is the first of three chapters that look at sources of performance metrics and techniques that can help you find out what is going on in a PeopleSoft system.

The Oracle database provides various sources of information about how long SQL statements took to execute, how they were executed, and how long they spent waiting for which database resources. Active Session History and Extended SQL Trace are two such sources, and I look at those in Chapter 11.
