Amps

The Edge generally uses several amps to create a richer sound with more depth, although his early work was recorded with a single amp. He is most associated with the Vox AC30TB, of which he is said to own more than 30. His favorite is a 1964, which has been used in the recording of every U2 album. This amp has been re-housed in a ’70s-era cabinet and has one Jensen Blue alnico speaker and one Jensen Silver alnico speaker. It has been re-capped and repaired with components from various Marshalls and Fenders, making it a singular amplifier.

He has also been known to use Fender amps alongside his Voxes, such as Tweed Deluxes (including a ’58 with a speaker taken from a Vox and a ’57 with a Jensen speaker), and a mid-’50s Harvard. Other amps include a newer Marshall 1987X head with a 4×12 cabinet (formerly owned by Mick Ralphs of Bad Company). But the basic platform upon which he builds his tone is the Vox AC30 Top Boost.
