PART II INFRASTRUCTURE CHOICES > Chapter 8 Storage—Where Do We Put All This Stu...

CHAPTER 8
STORAGE—WHERE DO WE PUT ALL THIS STUFF?

Just one thing stands between you and building VMs—storage. At this point you have a functioning server, controlled by vCenter, and you have networking, both for the management and use of the server as well as for VMs to use, but you have no place to actually put any VMs. We discussed networking before storage because you will need to leverage networking to use NAS, iSCSI, or FCoE; if you’re using directly connected storage or Fibre Channel, then networking is not needed to access storage (but of course is still required for management and other internal purposes).

Storage is a vast topic with many options and optimizations—that’s why this is one of the longest chapters of the book. Storage can be very simple (such as internal drives in a server) to very complex (such as a Storage Area Network [SAN] leveraging iSCSI and/or Fibre Channel). This book does not purport to replace any kind of SAN training from either VMware or your SAN vendor, but it does provide a good basis to get started.
