CONFIGURATION AND PATCH MANAGEMENT

In most IT environments, there is a designed patch management solution that allows for the automated patching of physical servers. Many system administrators consider patching to be a mandatory management process for operating systems and for hardware revisions. If patching has a level of importance in the physical world, does the importance of maintaining a patch level diminish once the servers have been virtualized? Absolutely not. In most situations, both physical and virtual servers require a regular, planned update procedure. The same level of care and testing will be invested when patching and updating both virtual and physical servers.

There are several approaches that can be used to update physical servers and their operating systems. Most vendors, including Microsoft and Red Hat, offer solutions that can be leveraged to perform patching and updating as new releases are made available. For example, Microsoft’s WSUS (Windows Software Update Service) is utilized in many environments to deploy tested and verified updates to desktops and servers throughout the enterprise. Several third-party solutions are also available and have gained wide acceptance. From an enterprise perspective, patching and updating server-related components cannot be ignored in the grand scheme of things.
