3 Compose, Record, Edit, Mix, and Master

Regardless of whether you are using Pro Tools as a platform for music creation, music production, radio production, video postproduction, sound-effects design, or any number of other tasks, it is helpful to consider the production process overall as being broken into several key stages. The start-to-finish production of original music will be the framework used to describe useful applications of the plug-in suite throughout this book. So it seems like a good idea to start with a quick look at what these various stages of music production are, and how they might relate to other types of audio production.

Dividing the process into five component stages, and then considering the usefulness (or uselessness) of the various plug-ins for each of those stages can help to give a better idea of the real strengths for each tool available in the suite. At their simplest forms, and with only a brief description to start with, we will look at these five stages as follows:
