Wait…. It’s all about…timing.
Any good comedian will tell you that timing is everything. For that matter, so will most bakers, stock brokers, political analysts, and that cop who just decided it’s your turn to be reminded not to drive so fast. Now I’ll remind you that timing plays a huge role in audio production as well.
We measure the repetitive tones we call musical notes by their frequency, or how many times the vibration repeats in one second—a time-based measurement. We build and follow music in segments of time: notes and rests, bars and beats. The entire structure of Pro Tools as a recording and editing system is based on a timeline where audio events can be moved around each other in time. We enjoy hearing bands that play tightly in-time with each other, and make fun of movies when the sound and picture don’t match up.
