1. Getting to Know Reason 5

Congratulations. You’ve gotten yourself some top-notch music production software, and it’s not hard to learn. You have a book in your hands that will give you a substantial head start and really save you some time in the learning process. To that end, Chapters 2 through 9 will focus on particular bits of Reason and will go pretty deep into each area.

The purpose of this first chapter is much like the purpose of the practice mode on a videogame, where you can get used to controlling the vehicle without anyone shooting at you. I’d like to help you get a feel for the basic functions in Reason that you’ll be using for the rest of the book and also point out a couple of important settings that you should be aware of to get the most out of Reason 5 (and have the best experience possible with this book).
