Line Up References

Use the guidelines given in Chapter 2 to select three to five appropriate individuals to use as professional references. Contact these individuals to reconnect or, if needed, to refresh their minds about how you know each other. Ask permission to use their names as job references.

Before giving a reference’s name to a perspective employer, be certain the reference will give a glowing account of your work history and/or abilities. If you have any doubt the individual will give you a good reference, select a different person.
