Chapter 12. Special Shooting > Underwater Photography

Underwater Photography

Thanks to their small size and excellent low-light capabilities, digital cameras make for excellent underwater photography. To shoot underwater, you’ll first need an enclosure for your camera. Some camera vendors make their own underwater housing, but if yours doesn’t, you can probably find a third-party housing. You want to be sure to get a housing designed for your specific model of camera. An ill-fitting housing might leak, which would, obviously, be very bad. A good housing will provide access to all of the camera’s menus and controls, and if you plan to do a lot of underwater photography, you should consider the availability of underwater housings when you’re shopping for a camera.

Once you have a housing, your next step will be to get underwater. Each type of housing will be rated to be safe to a specific depth, so make sure you don’t exceed the capabilities of your housing.
