If you can think back to the very basic drawings from our design document in Chapter 4, you will remember that our game has a backdrop that looks like space. The environment wasn’t really covered in great detail, but it will be a complete backdrop with stars and a planet. We will begin by opening GIMP and changing the Foreground Color to Black, as shown in Figure 7.1.
Next, create a new image by choosing the File > New menu. Click the Advanced Options button, set the image to 480 × 320 pixels, and choose Fill With: Foreground Color. You can see these settings in Figure 7.2.
You should now have an image that looks like Figure 7.3—just a simple black rectangle. Let’s add some stars to liven it up. Select Filters > Noise > Hurl, and from the resulting dialog box select Randomize and then click the OK button. The filter should look like Figure 7.4.
