Chapter 13. What Is Business Intelligence? > Survey of Microsoft BI Software

Survey of Microsoft BI Software

Now that we’ve acquired an initial understanding of data warehouses, we can return to our original question: What is business intelligence? We’ll begin by looking at some of the software offerings in the BI world to get a better sense of what it’s all about. In doing so, we’ll want to look at software that allows developers to build data warehouses, and also software utilized by end users to browse through relational data warehouses or cubes.

We’ll keep our overview focused on Microsoft software, as it’s most applicable to Access users. Since Access databases can be easily migrated to the more fully featured Microsoft SQL Server, it helps to be aware of some of the complementary BI offerings from Microsoft. In our brief survey, we’ll include a few screenshots to give a sense of what the software looks like. After presenting this overview of Microsoft software, we’ll follow up with a few comments about some of the other major BI vendors.
