Filing Information

The information on the following pages is provided to offer you general information and save you some valuable time in your research, but by no means is all-inclusive. Some states have made the process of starting a nonprofit much easier than others. The information on the following pages is for domestic nonprofit organizations.

Here is a quick checklist to help guide you through this process:

Draft organization’s bylaws

Select (if you haven’t done so by now) your board of directors

Prepare a budget and anticipated financial statements for the next three years

Hold a board meeting and elect officers

Draft Articles of Incorporation and file with your state

Reserve/register your organization’s name

File and obtain your organization’s Employer Identification Number (EIN) using IRS Form SS-4
