Taken as a whole, the games industry is a multi-billion-dollar industry. There has been a gradual increase in the number of universities and colleges worldwide offering courses focusing specifically on game development. There has also been an increase in both the number of platforms and systems on which games can be played and in the rate at which games for those platforms are released on a commercial basis. These increases coincide with a rise in the number of people entering the games industry annually for full-time work, either by finding employment at an established game-development studio or by founding their own independent teams.
